How to Easily Perform Keyword Researching for Your SEO Needs

This is a guest post by Debbie of SEO New York.

It’s no secret that in order to obtain and maintain a high ranking for your web pages in the SERP’s (Search Engine Results Pages – the pages that come up when someone searches for a certain word or phrase) you need to use targeted words, known as keywords, in specific places in your article.

This is known as search engine optimization or SEO. The problem is, you don’t know what word or words people are searching for without doing a bit of keyword research. Several people have written books and even entire courses on how to do keyword research properly, but the basics are pretty straightforward.

How to Find Popular Keywords

3599439759_cdc5071ec7_oTo find popular keywords for your specific niche, you need to put yourself in your target market’s shoes for a minute. Your target market is the specific demographic of people who really want or need your product. You need to think the way your target market thinks to come up with the most relevantkeywords they might use to search for your products. Once you create a list of several keyword possibilities, it’s time to find a keyword research tool to help you determine the popularity of your choices.

Popular Keyword Research Tools

One of the most popular – and easiest to use – keyword research tools is operated by Google. The Google keyword tool is free to use and offers plenty of usable information to help determine quality keywords for your niche.

To use the Google keyword tool, you simply type in your keyword and hit the “Get keyword ideas” button. The tool will generate a list of related keywords and provide search data about each keyword. This data includes advertiser competition (how much people are paying for that particular keyword in Google Adwords), monthly search volume, (how often that particular keyword is searched on Google in your targeted country and language), the global monthly search volume (how often the keyword is searched worldwide) and whether the match type is exact or broad ranged.

By looking through the list of related keywords, you can find selections that have a high search number, but a lower cost for Google Adwords. This keyword tool can be used even if you don’t use Google Adwords. By looking for keywords with a lower cost, you are probably going to find words that have a little less competition from big business competition.

Other popular keyword research tools that work in the same way as Google’s tool include Wordtracker and SEO Book. Each of these tools has slightly different information, but they are all good tools for narrowing down keywords.

Determining Your Competition

One way to determine the competition for a particular keyword is to look at the data in the keyword tool. The advertiser competition figures and graph are great indicators for how much competition your keyword has. You can also type your keyword directly into Google search and see how many results turn up. The trick is to find keywords that have a large volume of searches and a lower volume of competitive pages. If you find a keyword with less than 500.000 competing pages, you stand a good chance of ranking for that keyword, if you optimize your content properly.

Conclusion

Keyword research can be time consuming, but it is critical to Search Engine Optimization and getting your website pages to rank near the top of the Search Engine Results Pages. Taking the time to determine the popularkeywords for your marketing niche will definitely pay off in site visitors and sales.

Human vs. Search Engines: Striking A Balance

While writing articles for your website, you are creating it for 2 Audiences i.e Humans & The Search Engines. We should obviously try to write for Humans as they are the only one who are going to comment and be the website lover. But while doing so, we should not forget the one for whom everyone is going crazy, optimizing their website and from where most of their traffic comes from; it’sSearch Engines.

Google always recommends writing for humans, not for search engines. I think it’s really a good advice and it means you will be writing the most compelling article to achieve the desired outcome of it. But on the other side, it also looks like a meaningless advice. If there were no search engines then websites would have look like brochures that were largely pictorial.

Here, you will need to learn how to balance your writing such that you get the end product which would be suitable for Humans and The Search Engines.

balance

Writing For Humans

While writing for Humans, you have to consider 3 main things:

  • Proper Readability
  • Not Too Long Articles and Specially Boring Articles
  • Your Originality

Creating Proper Readability
Everyone is able to write. But are you able to write which people will really read? There are many things which you need to consider while writing a quality article. Like the Article Title, First Paragraph Of your Article, Proper Grammar, Easy To Understand Words.

Here, I will advise you to read my article “Having Strategy while writing articles is IMPORTANT!” in which I have written step-by-step procedure of writing a successful article.

Keeping The Length Of Article In Mind
Nobody wants to read a 1500 words, specially if it’s boring. Boring in the sense that you have not made proper paragraphs, haven’t used any codes to highlight certain parts of your article, same thing is being repeated in your article which you would have just told etc. Often your readers will skim and won’t absorb a page with a lot of content. It’s Scientifically Proven thing ;)

When you are writing a long article, try to break it into series, and if it’s not possible to break that article which I accept could happen with you, then you should at least try to make it look interesting.

If you want to know various techniques of writing short articles when you don’t have time or due to any other problem, then do read my recent article “Techniques for Writing Short Articles on your Blog“.

Maintaining Originality
Search Engines are concerned about duplicate content and you will have to avoid it. As humans are very much concerned about plagiarism, search engines could also take a serious step if it looks like your content has been lifted from somewhere else. Search Engine could take a serious step by ranking your website inappropriately or not even indexing and showing your website in theirsearch engines.

Writing For Search Engines

Earlier, many people just used to stuff keywords in their article which made them easily ranked higher on search engine rankings as at that time algorithms used to rank pages with higher keyword frequency on top. But, “Keyword Density” is not only one thing which you should try for ranking better on today’s modern search engines like Google.

While writing for search engines, you should try to consider these 5 basic things:

  • Use Of H1 or H2 tags, like done in this article.
  • An URL consisting of keywords related to article (Do check a plugin called SEO Post Link which will help in this)
  • Keyword Density but in a proper range
  • Interlinking your articles by various methods
  • Use of Long Tail Keywords (Read this superb article written by Maki from DoshDosh about Targeting and Finding Long Tail Keyword.

Conclusion

The best way to write successfully for your website is to strike a balance between the needs of your human readers and search engines and once you have developed the ability to write for those two audiences, then you will be getting great benefits of it.

What about you? Do You Write For Human or Search Engines or Both? What are your methods of doing so?

Why Article Marketing FAILS To Deliver

This is a guest post by Anand Srinivasan who is the founder of KnewThis.com

We have all been there and done that. Article marketing is supposed to be one of the most genuine ways to get a lot of back link and traffic to our niche blogs. It is said that all you need to do is write one genuine article on an ezine directory and watch it getting copied all over the internet, thus getting you lots of back links. The ezine directory itself gets ranked in search engines thus earning you relevant traffic.

But how many of us have seen success with article directory? Yes, there indeed has been lots of people who have made considerable number of affiliate sales through article directories, but what I am talking about here, is the return on investment.

fail

Time is Money and from this perspective, article directories take a lot of time and effort.

Word Length:

Most article directories require you to write at least 300 word articles. How many such articles can you write in a day?

Time Spent:

Most of us are better off writing 5-10 sentence paragraphs, but writing a good article is an altogether different ball game. Even assuming one good article takes 20 minutes, it means you can hardly write two articles in an hour. Then comes the more arduous task of submitting it to the differentarticle directories. Of course, there is software to do it, but then most of them are paid and most people do article marketing because it is free. Otherwise, don’t you think they can simply buy links?

Site Name:

Most article directories easily give away that the article poster is simply trying to build links. A search engine visitor visting ‘GoArticles’ can easily realize that the website is a place where people submit articles which means that what he is getting is not genuine advice, but simply a promotion to the author’s website.

Conclusion

As a result of all these cons, while there are conversions from article directories, they are not how much one would like. The only people who seem to keep article marketing alive are those who sell ebooks that teach you how to do article marketing.

Have you tried article marketing? What has been your experience? Please do tell us in the comments.

So You Think You’re Good At SEO, Huh?

*some* points discussed in this post. However, if you don’t consider yourself an expert when it comes to SEO, go on and read this post. You’ll find almost all of it interesting and worth the time spent reading.

That said, this post is not going to be on something specific. Instead, it’ll discuss on SEO as general. It won’t be the boring principles and concepts, either. So don’t shy away from it just yet.

What does SEO involve, anyway? Some say it involves building backlinks, others say it involves optimizing the internal functions of the website (linking structure, keywords density etc), while a few say it’s all about getting the word out and about.

Put simply, SEO involves everything. From optimizing your website, to getting the word out and about. If you’re trying to build backlinks as part of your SEO strategy, then try the following tips next time.

Create content that’s not only engaging but induces a feeling of ‘want to share’ in your readers

Your readers will always want to share interesting stuff. Everyone does. Take advantage of this human trait. Create content that is not only engaging, but also compels your readers to share it with others. This way you’re not just making sure that readers keep coming back for more; instead they’ll get new readers with them. Extra traffic and backlinks… without the extra work.

Write about it first

You don’t have to be BBC news. But you can still blog about the ‘new hype’ as soon as possible. It’s not the news that will set you apart. It’s the review on the news that will get you visitors. And when you get visitors, you get attention. And attention, obviously, leads to more quality backlinks!

Disagree!

Vague… yes. But also effective. Sometimes following the trend is not enough. Sometimes you have to break off and travel in the opposite direction. If everyone says “Yes” to a particular issue, you say “Yes, but No”. Doing so sets you apart from all the rest. And when that happens, you become the center of attention. You get blogged about (or linked to) and that results in backlinks. Found Tricky? ;)

Remember though, when planning an SEO strategy there’s a couple issues that you should take care of. Stuff that you need to stay away from. It’s the blackhat techniques. They sure seem inviting and interesting. Given the fact they tend to produce results almost immediately. However, in the long run, there’s nothing worse than blackhat SEO techniques.

Here are some known and popular Blackhat Techniques[I don't recommend trying it if you are not a daring person ;) ]:

Hiding Text

Popular blackhat SEO method often used by spammers to stuff their pages with all sorts of keywords. Their intentions vary. Some do it to boost their search engine rankings (artificially), others do it to trigger high paying advertisements (contextual ad serving technology) while others do it to aid them in their overall SEO strategy. The mere idea of hiding text to boost rankings definitely sounds inviting, but the search engines will catch up on to it very soon. So unless you’re looking to get banned, refrain from it.

Cloaking Pages

The most common (and dangerous) method that falls under Blackhat SEO. The basic concept of cloaking involves serving two different pages. One to the search engines, the other to the real visitors. Spammers create a page full of keywords and phrases (and content that makes no sense) in order to boost theirsearch engine rankings . This page is returned whenever a search engine bot visits their website. However, when a real user visits their website, a completely different page is returned.

Buying/Selling Links

Up until recently, this was the hype. People buying links all over to boost their search engine rankings. However, while it’s not blackhat, it most certainly affects the search engines in a negative way. Anyone can buy a few high quality links to get a boost in theirsearch engine rankings . There’s no guarantees that the site itself is going to be of any value. However, the search engines would obviously rank it higher, given the fact it has high quality links pointing back to it.

The problem arises when a common man searches for something, and ends up visiting the site; of course, disappointed because there’s nothing worth looking on the site. This, in turn, creates a negative impression of the search engine. One visitor makes no difference, but for something like Google, MSN, Yahoo, we’re talking about millions of visitors.

That said, recently, all the major search engines have started cracking down on paid links. Paid links manipulate the way in which site reporting and sorting occurs, and is thus considered unethical.

Conclusion

It’s very easy to get carried away when making up an SEO strategy for your brand new website. Thing is, you need to make sure you don’t get carried away. Make logical decisions and judgments. Decide what’s best for your website/blog before you blindly implement every other SEO tip you come across.

Internal Link Building to Boost your Search Engine Rankings

Today, I am going to talk about the most overlooked Link Building strategies. Most of the times I am surprised how most people completely ignores this powerful link building strategies. This is how sites like Wikipedia and Amazon dominates the front page of Google. It’s actually your own internal Link structure. The internal links within your own site can have a large impact over your Search Engine Rankings. This is especially true if you are having a large website/blog with many pages.

You can increase the ranking of the individual pages within your site by adding the right link in strategic places. In fact you can boost your own Search Rankings simply by modifying and doing few simple tweaks to the internal link structure of your site. You are basically funneling the link juice within your own site to boost certain pages of your site.

There are three main aspects of internal linkingsite navigation, in-context linking and anchor text.

1. Site Navigation

Proper site navigation is a basic and integral part of on-site optimization. You want to link to your top pages from the navigation menu – whether those are main categories or just keyinternal pages.

You will probably have more than one navigation menu – a main menu for site navigation, and a secondary menu for informational pages (about, contact etc.)

The site navigation has just one purpose – to highlight the main sections of your website. Think of which top-level pages are the most important, and add them to your main navigation. If you have a blog or website and if it has several categories, then you can list them in a ‘third’ menu in the sidebar of your website.

2. In-Context Linking

Search engines give more weight to in-context links than link lists (on a links page or in the sidebar). This makes in-context linking important for off-site links as well asinternal links.

Ideally, you want to make it so that all related posts/pages are interlinked amongst each other through in-context links. You can make use of Related Posts plugin(both blogger and wordpress have this).

If you look at Wikipedia their most of the word are interlinked with another article of Wikipedia. This is one the excellent example of how authoritative domains with smartinternal linking practices and proper on-page optimization can dominate search engine rankings for all types of keywords.

However, if you do this on a personal blog or a blog related to something specific only; it might not look as good to the readers. So make sure you only choose some relevant pages to be inter linked.

But do note that Inter-Linking on a site with hundreds of pages will have a bigger effect than just a handful of pages.

3. Anchor Text

Links are important but without using the right keywords they will not deliver the required benefits. Links without related keywords are like shooting arrows blind – you are sending link juice y to those pages, but you’re not telling the search engines what topic those pages are relevant to.

These tips really works. If you don’t’ believe me I can show you a proof of this own blog.

Go to Google> In the search field of Google enter link:www.smartbloggerz.com Or you can simply just click this google link directly.

As you can see in the results on the front page; two of my pages are already been considered as backlinks by Google and they rank well on the search results too.

internal-link-buiding

At he end I would say that don’t underestimate the power of strong internal link structure. A site that is properly themed and properly structured to target a specific series of keywords has a much greater chance of dominating the front page of Google.

Hope you might have understood the power of Internal Link Structure and would try to follow it. Waiting for your response ;)

How to Push your site up the rankings with Google PageRank

Maximizing your search engine ranking relies on a lot more than keywords nowadays. Google’s PageRank system can make your website stand out from the crowd, rise to the top and make the search engines happy.

It used to be that you could get virtually any website at the top of the rankings with just the judicious use of keywords both behind the scenes and in the actual text. Those days are almost gone. The fact that you could manipulate search engine rankings really ticked off the search engines themselves and they devised different ways to test the validity of a site. One of the best known examples of this is Google’s PageRank system.

So, how can you make PageRank work for you?

In the past a simple algorithmic search could see a fairly pointless website ranked real high. If the site was built around the right keywords in the right places and its text was keyword stuffed then it might fool the search engines and move up the ranks. Great as this was for the site’s owners it didn’t do much for the reputations of the search engines. Sites with no real intrinsic value to a visitor could rank high and sites that were useful could sink without a trace.

PageRank looks to change the way that the system works by giving specific values to web pages. The higher the PageRank that a page gets the more likely it is to occupy a high position in a search. While keywords can still have an effect here this change simply makes it harder to get a search ranking without merit which is good news for website visitors on the whole.

If you look at this another way, the keywords and the way that they are used on a site can show a search engine how relevant it is. But, the added functionality of PageRank can take two web pages with the same keywords and keyword use and establish which is actually better in terms of quality. Keywords don’t matter in this instance, the higher PageRank quality rating will get the best search engine ranking.

So, how have things changed? Well, essentially, now it’s all about links and what they do for a site. Links have long been a greatly desired SEO tactic but they are much more important now in PageRank terms. This system basically analyzes the links that lead toa site and gives them a value. Each link that comes into a site is viewed as a positive ‘vote’ on its behalf.

THE EXAMPLE!

So, for example, if you run a news site that is linked into by another news site then this will stand in your favor here. Things, however, are not that simple as PageRank then analyzes the site that links to your site to assess its value. If this site in turn is deemed as being valuable by PageRank then its link to your site increases in value even more.

As you can see having a link is not, in itself, enough to give you maximum benefits. What a site needs is not just the link but a valuable link. So, for example, in the news site context let’s say your link comes in from Reuters(just imagine). Now that would be an extremely valuable link. This site is high in traffic and has a significant reputation. If, however, your link comes in from your local weekly newspaper then the link, while of some value, won’t necessarily get the ‘double whammy’ that the Reuters link would.

One of the great things about the PageRank system is that you can use more than one link per page. As you can imagine this gives you a lot more scope to try and build up votes for a page and for your site in general. But while it makes sense to get in-bound links wherever you can; it is still important to think of their quality. A low quality link can have a negative effect on how you are ranked by the system in just the same way as a high quality one can improve it.

Often this is not something we actively think about. In general traffic terms a link equals increased traffic which is always a good thing, right? Not always in this context. If you do find that a site that could push down your ranking has linked to your site then you may need to use the ‘nofollow’ attribute value. This will tell Google, and most of the other major search engines, that the link should be disregarded.

Finally, do remember that links are not the only issue to be considered in ranking. Any site will stand a far greater chance of being perceived as valuable by a search engine if it contains robust and useful content that will add value to its visitors. So, don’t ignore what your site has to say!

What do you think? Can PageRank help in Pushing your site rankings? Do let me know.

Selection of Proper Directories is Important in Article Marketing

Writing articles and marketing it online is one of the most effective and free way to publicize your website, and promote your products and services online.

The Web is like a printing press with a huge demand and interest for articles written by experts. There are literally thousands of websites and ezines that are begging for good articles written by you. Such type of sites needs lots of articles submitted to them. They even search sites on the web for permission to use articles.

So, how do you know which article directories to select?

Through my few months of experience, and many conversations with some Internet Marketers, in order to have the greatest impact, you need to use a 3-tiered article marketing approach targeting:

  1. The major article directories like Ezinearticles.com, Goarticles.com, Articledashboard.com and Ideamarketers.com .
  2. Smaller niche directory sites that relates to your content.
  3. Niche ezine and website publishers who need only good quality content that will add value to their website/blog or email newsletter audience.

Many people asks; What is the best way to find ezines and websites that are the most read(human wise) so my article gets the most exposure?; I think that should not be the first question you ask yourself. Yes, I know you do want to find websites that are hugely visited and ezines that are the most read; but more importantly, you want to focus on finding websites and ezine publishers within your specificniche that have strong emotional connections to their audience.

Most likely, you are already visiting their websites or subscribing to their ezines. If you don’t know who has a great ezine related to your industryniche, there are plenty of ezine directories like bestezines.com on the net that can guide you.

Other strategies include:

- Research your competitors and see where are there articles being published?

- Perform a Google search. Just type in your industry or article topic followed by the words article submission. For Example search for “blogging article submission” , “make money online article submission” , health article submission” and you will discover many article submission sites with your preferred niche.

- And, don’t forget to check sites for magazines within your niche. More and more publications, are looking for fresh, new content for their website, to drive traffic up in order to sell more print magazines in the long run. This constant updating of articles found only on the website and not in their print publications means more opportunities for writers and experts. An articlewritten by you published on sites like Entrepreneur Magazine and Mothering Magazine will give your company the vast amount of exposure and credibility it needs.

I hope following these startergies will help you in finding your proper article directory to get the best benefits of article marketing.

How to rank high on Google for your targeted country users

As you know search engines like Google shows different search results based on your country for many keywords. A few days back I was talking to my Chinese friend about this thing and those ideas today I am sharing with you through this blog post. Please note that the ideas mentioned here are just assumptions based on the search results we got while testing this trick.

Google gives different search results often based on the location of different users i.e A lot of keywords shows distinctive regional comparison. It has been seen that many times when you search for your keyword and you are living in countries like china or India you will see lots of sites which may rank very poor for US search results. For example, search for restaurants, banks, if I search in India right now, the vast majority of cases in India want to see the local restaurants, banks, rather than referring to the United States, even if I was in the Google.com search.

(When I searched for restaurant right now I saw that the result after the wikipedia was related to my own country which proves this thing)

This makes for a global target site, the need to optimize the ranking in different countries. There are several factors that may affect the site’s ranking in various countries.

Host location

Web server on the India, means a greater possibility of the site content is on the India or for Indian users. Then the IP address from India; when a user searches, the site is even more likely to be out front inthe search results.

Domain Name Category

This logic is the same as the host location, the local country means that the website domain name for this country for example .co.in , . com.cn , .co.uk . Domain name suitable for Indian users – . co.in ,Chinese users – .com.cn or .cn and co.uk for United Kingdom users.

Many large companies in different countries would like to improve the rankings for that country, for which they often use this strategy.

Indexed local directory

If the website is indexed in the local directories and yellow pages of that country chances are that it would help Google in recognizing your site more properly for your country results. This is a very strong signal.

Website Contact

Web site address, telephone area code, zip code if provided through meta tags or any other means, the search robots will index it and it will make it easy to determine the site location for good user experience.

External Links and Internal Link

In order to improve the ranking for a country, we should try to link or get backlinks from the same country targeted website. If you are a website owner targeting specific country users like India or China you will be more likely linking to websites made for the same countries.

Text and spelling

English web sites (and there may be other text), different countries have different usage and spelling of words.

SEO – search engine optimization or search engine optimisation.

For example, SEO; Anglo-American spelling of the name is different, search engine optimization web site is obviously the United States, and about the use of search engine optimisation is a British website. So this difference in British and United States spellings also helps search engines determine the local characteristics of the site.

I hope these things would help you rank better if you are thinking of having a website for specific country or language users.

Do tell me if have any more ideas in your mind which could be important for ranking good for specific country results by commenting below.

Dirty Trick For Getting Backlinks From Google

Might be thinking from the title what I am going to share with you today and why it is called ‘Dirty’. I won’t let you wait for it; The thing is called ‘Google Notebook‘.

Google Notebook is a web research tool that allows users to clip text, search results, and images from web pages and place them in notebooks for later use.

Notebook entries can be defined as public or private. So, here’s the rub. While surfing on the net I came to know about this trick according to which you can easily get some backlinks from your article or notes published in yourGoogle notebook.

So I published an article into my Google notebook with some links pointing towards my blog and when I checked the links that whether it is Dofollow or Nofollow and OMG, these links were Do-Follow. You can check it here. Since I have done this trick just few days back so I am expecting that it will surely show some results to me after some days. Meanwhile, I also came to know that these pages gets listed on Microsoft search Engine fast which is the amongst the top 10 sites of the world.

I think that links in Google notebook might be a good thing to do for a little backlinks and deep links for interior site pages, but interlinking them in this fashion along with nonsense content screams spammm. What are your opinions about it?

[Update: Google have stopped new sign-ups for Google Notebook. Therfore you can not try this method if you haven't registered for it earlier. Sorry!]

Importance of One way Backlinks

When you’re a webmaster you need to build 1 way backlinks to your Blogger blog or site in order to make sure that you increase your search engine rankings. One way backlinks are the hardest backlinks to get because they involve the most amount of work to get, but this is why they are valuable in the search engines and highly sought after by webmasters. There are lots of ways you can gain 1 way backlinks to your site or blog and they’re all typically useful in some way but there are some that will rank better then others.

The best type of 1 way link to receive is through another website or web-blog related to your blog where they give you an in-content 1 way link.

This can happen from your great posting i.e great content and sometimes you can also ask to be mentioned on a blog in return for content or links on other sites of yours. This could also increase relationship between bloggers. If you can build your links this way then you stand an amazing chance at getting lots ofsearch engine rankings in time.

One of the easiest known ways to get quality, one way links is by finding free website directories and then submitting your URL to them. I know, this can be a very tedious and slow process, but at the same time very rewarding. You could also use various Free Directory Submitter services on the net some of them are free but not guaranteed but some needs to be paid and could be a guaranteed product.

At the end I would like to say that Once you’ve achieved the rankings y never ever stop building One Way links because ‘SEO’ is a thing that you have to perform continuously to fight with other blogs who are trying to get the rankings in search engines.

Why should you comment on blogs?

Commenting on other blogs is a very good thing to get readers no matter the blog is a dofollow or nofollow. You should comment on other blogs of your choice regularly. If you are still not convinced about this, here are some top reasons that tells why you should keep commenting on otherblogs:

1. If you keep commenting on other blog with your identity, the owner plus other readers will also start knowing/recognising you.
For example, let’s take my blog, I have a reader named “Krisditya”; he comments regulary on my blog on various articles which shows his true readership qualities. You need to leave comment as this is the best and the only way the blog owner can analyze your goals without any sort of direct or indirect communication.

2. Many blogs, these days let you leave a link of your website while writing comments for the blog so while commenting, if you leave a link to your blog, then the chances are you will receive traffic from their if you made any outstanding comment. Thus it will help you in gaining inbound links and traffic also increase in readership.

3. Luck, could be a major factor while commenting. Since when you comment you don’t know that who is reading that thing and it could be possible that some biggies from the industry is reading it and could be amazed by your opinion and might help you in someway :) .

Other than that, I advise to comment on new blogs as much as possible since if you are commenting in a crowded blog like Shoemoney, then chances are less that it could be read by everybody.

So keep commenting and add value to the discussion as it includes lots of fun. Now tell me will you/have you start/started commenting onblogs? :)

SEO Guide to improve your Search Engines Rankings

Traffic volume is the most important parameter when it comes to monetizing your blog (more visitors = more money). A large portion of traffic volume comes from search engines. To monetize efficiently, it’s crucial to get your blog contents in the top list of any search engine result pages (SERP). Search Engine Optimization (SEO) helps you to achieve this goal.

There are two types of search results:

  • Natural (a.k.a organic).
  • Paid (e.g. sponsored links in Google SERP).

We’ll focus on improving your ranking for the natural search results. Getting in the first few pages of the SERP will ensure that most people will find your content.

Search engines basically need one thing to know where to put your blog on their list – your rank on the keyword(s) used to search. For example, if your blog title is Tiki Tiki Guide to Making Money, you might be ranked high if people search for the keywords ‘tiki tiki guide’. But you might be far beneath the thousands of other pages on the keywords ‘making money online’. The question is, which of these two keyword phrases people will most likely search for. The answer is obvious.

The key to performing SEO lies in knowing what keywords to use and how to optimize their use. Be warned that heavily searched keywords are usually targeted by millions of sites and blogs, whom you have to compete against to move up the SERP. Finding a balance between highly competitive and highly searched keywords is a challenge.

Keyword and SEO research takes time. Even professional bloggers take a few months to move up the SERP right into the first few pages. Above all, content is the heart of a blog. If the content isn’t good, no SEO research will do you any good.

Target the Right Keywords
Deciding what to blog is the most critical part. You must do research on keywords prior to deciding your niche. Here are some list of what to check on:

  • Search volumes on those keywords.
  • Number of competitors writing in the same niche.
  • Ads served based on those keywords, so that you don’t blog on the ones serving very low cost-per-click(CPC).
  • Variations of these keywords: their synonyms and related words or phrases (see which get searched more with less competitor).

The best tool to help you with this is Wordtracker, available at a price. The site offers free trial and limited functions available for free. There are other keyword tools available with different functionalities.

Choose Suitable Domain Name
SEO keywords begin from the URL. The best domain name is the one with keyword(s) in it. It’s great to have a URL like www.yourownname.com, but you’ll loose out on getting better SERP rank if it doesn’t contain any keywords. Isn’t it obvious that www.iwanttomakemoneyonline.com helps SEO better than www.johnjohnnyjonathan.com. Unless of course, you’ve built some high reputation and your name gets searched a lot.

The other perspective on domain naming is that building a brand name is better in the long run, with something easy and catchy to remember. So there’s two side of the coin: you might want to flip on it. But once you’ve builtyour blog to a certain level, it’s not good to change the domain name. Having a URL that’s both catchy and keyword-friendly is ultimately the best. Problogger.net is both catchy and keyword-friendly. Use whois lookup to check if a domain is available.

Use Keywords in Other Sections
The idea is to maximize the use of keywords wherever you can (don’t overdo it though). These are the places that you must put keywords in them:

  • Blog Title – Search engines weigh your blog title heavily. Again, it’s best to find a name that is both catchy and keyword-rich.
  • Blog Description – This is where you want to write phrases that catches attention, but rich with keywords too. If you’re ranked even at No.1, but your description is as dull as a bull, nobody is going to click toyour blog.
  • File Names – Use keywords to name files, pictures, photos, graphs, videos, etc that you’re using in your blog.
  • Internal Links – Some sites use image maps with hotspot hyperlinks, images, or buttons to navigate within the sites. This works against SEO. It’s better to use text links instead of images as text links carry more weight when getting ranked insearch engines.
  • Tags or Labels – Each posts should be tagged or labelled with keywords to help strengthen SEO. Some prominent blog directories, like Technorati, uses these tags to identifyyour blog for others to search.

Blog titles, descriptions, and keywords can be enhanced by using META tags. Here’s an article on how to use META tags efficiently.

Use Keywords Often in Content
How do search engine algorithms decide what each post is about? They’ll scan for the the most-used keywords in the post, with different weights given to different elements. To make your posts ‘acknowledged’ as being related to any particular keywords, use and repeat them often in the posts. But don’t do this too excessively to the point of being straight-out blunt and annoying. Having the right keyword-density in your posts have two benefits:

  • Draws in more related ads to the post pages. Related ads have better click-through-rates (CTR).
  • Contributes more towards getting higher rank on those keywords.

Build Links from External Sites
One way to get linked to is by exchanging links, commonly done in Blogrolls. Higher-ranking external sites helps your blog more in terms of SEO. Another way to do this is to submit your blog to directories (here’s a tool for an automatic submission for multiple directories). Another highly trusted free directory is DMOZ. Posts can also be submitted to social media directories (e.g. Digg, StumbleUpon) that get voted up/down. Two benefits of submitting to directories:

  • You’re building links on external sites to your blog/posts.
  • Others may stumble on your blog/posts in these directories and visit your blog from there.

Use Keywords to Anchor Hyperlinks
Don’t use the term ‘click here’ to anchor hyperlinks – use keywords instead. Hyperlinks are valued more by ranking algorithms than the normalcontent text. Keyword anchors contribute better to SEO compared to the clickhere anchors.

Create Efficient Site Navigation Map
How to influence your readers to stay longer in your blog? Make it easy for them to see what’s in your blog. To do this is to build efficient site map, something like an Archives or Categories lists. Even better is to list Related Posts items at the end of each post. Use keywords to anchor all links. This practice helps SEO as it build links to your own blog using keywords, albeit internally, and helps spiders to crawl up your pages easily.

This article has been adapted from an article by Randy DuerMyer at About.com (Alexa rank: 144). The main key points was summarized to shorten the text and expanded to include new and valuable information not available in the original article. The new article (1134 words) is much shorter by 40% compared to the original article (1880 words).

How Free Domains Affects Blog

Hi! As you might have read while entering the blog that my exams are going but still I can not wait so long therefore I am writing this post to aware you about How Free Domain Names Affect your Blog.

Many People while starting blogging basically uses a free domain name like .tk,.co.nr,.uni.cc and many more fundoo domains. They have to do this basically due to lack of funds just like what happened with me while starting blogging but later on managed in giving my blog it’s own domain.

Many people takes their free domain from .tk but you should remember that they do not not give you any dns support. They will just redirect your url like smartbloggerz.blogspot.com, to www.smartbloggerz.tk just like tinyurl does.

If you are a newbie you will not get to know the difference. It will create a framed web page thus your original site body will not be indexed by search engine.Just the meta description & meta keywords will be indexed.

Therefore when people will search a required topic then the search engines like Google cannot find it even if you have written it in your blog post. Thus you will keep loosing your potential visitors & you won’t get a decent traffic.

So I would recommend you to buy a domain if it’s affordable otherwise stick to your .blogspot domain Or If your blog is popular then you can ask your readers for the donation. If they like reading your blog they will definitely help you.

Checking the “nofollow” Factor

If you’ve been doing any kind of reading about link building, then you’ve probably seen people mentioning “nofollow” and “dofollow” links. These are very important terms to understand when you are trying to build great links back to your site in order to increase your search engine rankings. But, to the person who is new to all of this, it may be kind of confusing. I am going to help you break it down.

“Dofollow” are simply the links which are crawled by Search Engines and “Nofollow” are simply the opposite of it.So I think you would obviously prefer most of the times a “dofollow” blog if you are tryingto build links for your blog.

As many people might be knowing my Blog is completely a “dofollow” blog but the question arises How should I Check it?

The Solution is here:

Solution 1

1.Go to the website/blog you’d like to visit.

2.If you’re a firefox browser user then click VIEW from the Menu Bar, go to PAGE SOURCE. (For IE users, choose SOURCE)

3.Using your keyboard, Press CTRL + F.

4.Type any “Name of the commentator” from that post in the “Find tool”.Also make sure that the commentator gave the URL to his site in his comment.

5.And Now look at the example’s below which will help you to decide whether it is nofollow or dofollow.

Example of DoFollow URL of the commentator:
Smart Bloggerz

Example of NoFollow URL of the commentator:
Smart Bloggerz

But Sometimes it becomes complicated, tiring also boring using this.So If you don’t like this method then try the other Solution below.

Solution 2

There are some Firefox Add-ons which will help you decide the same in a easy and fast way.

Some of them are “NoDoFollow” and “SearchStatus

After install, restart Firefox for your settings to take effect .

Now to use the “NoDoFollow” add-on move on to any web page , right click anywhere and select NoDoFollow to activate this addon & see how it works in below screenshot.

The red color means it is nofollow and blue means it is dofollow.

To use the “SearchStatus” add-on Look at the firefox status bar, right click SearchStatus icon, check HIGHLIGHT NO FOLLOW LINKS and then go to the website/blog you’d like to visit and see its effects below in screenshot.

So you decide which solution you like and would like using and keep commenting on blogs. Now it’s your choice whether you want it to be nofollow or dofollow.

In bringing your blog to high ranking on Google search for this competition, all you have to do is structuring your blog and then optimize its page content for search engine spiders. This approaching will enhance the blog visibility by empowering all aspects and elements of pages which will raise the blog page relevancy in Google.

One of the main factors that play an important role in Google algorithm that determine page relevancy is keyword usage. Google look these below mentioned keyword factors and apply a sort of relevancy score for each page ofyour blog.

1. Keyword density :
Keyword density is the figure of how many times a keyword used on a blog’s page divided by the total number of words on the page. Since this competition is using keyword phrase of SEO Test then you must spread the appearances of this keyword on your blog article that will represent a moderate density. Actually there’s no fixed figure of of ideal density value for Google, but by allowing 3%-5%keyword density is quite representative for your blog to be visible enough for Google.

2. Keyword format :
This is an aspect of page relevancy which measure whether keywords are bolded or italicized or underlined on a page. For example, you can do it like this SEO Test for bolding the keyword, or SEO Test for italicizing it, or SEO Test for underlining it. The best way to do this is on the first paragraph of your blog post and spread them along the whole portion of the article.

3. Keyword proximity :
Keyword proximity is a measuring figure of word order and closeness of any individual words that build up a phrase in your page content. For example, when someone searches for “SEO Test”, then Google will assigns a higher score for your page containing exactly the keyphrase “SEO Test” than if it is containing the keyphrase “Web SEO Test”.

4. Keyword placement :
Google also take account where on the page your keywords are located. This is called keyword placement, which Google will look for the keywords whether it located on the page title, in headings, in body content text, in text links, or in image ALT tag. Reach this by placing the keyword “SEO Test” on the title of pages.
